Science takes shape
Classrooms, however spacious and well-equipped, tend to provide a predictable environment within which to learn. The design of the science laboratories in POWIIS, however, steps off in a new direction, and the laboratories now being equipped as the main building approaches completion, are not only spacious and well-equipped, but the first of their kind on the island.
Taking up the entire top floor, the science department will be an impressive hub of activity. Each of the nine laboratories features two areas; one for desk-based teaching, and one for practical work. Based on the GBP 15 million ‘SciTec’ building at Oundle School in the UK, the design allows for focused activities, whether for example introducing a topic, carrying out the practical investigation, or discussing the data gathered. All lessons can have a practical ‘hands-on’ element which pupils will enjoy and which of course is the foundation of scientific discovery.
As with much at POWIIS, giving pupils real experiences of science, art, music or design technology is central to our ambitions.
