Our local community outreach day today was a great experience for all. It was POWIIS students’ own initiative and they led, and taught, local school students in sessions in maths, English, drama and sports. All found the day a great success, which is the start of a planned sequence of days both at the school and in the local home areas.
Over the weekend, Carine Soon of Year 10 participated in the National Chinese Classical Song Competition, which was organised by the Voice of Nature Academy. Sponsored by the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health, the event drew 140 contestants and was held at SJKC Kwang Hwa Primary School in Penang. Carine was awarded the Bronze Award in the Secondary School category and will participate in the finals. Congratulations, Carine!
The torrential rains didn’t manage to put a damper on last Friday’s Speech Day, as both our students and staff heroically forged on! This event is meant to commemorate the students’ excellent academic achievements, and hopes to inspire more students to do the same. Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, our guest speaker, gave a very uplifting speech, which was very much appreciated by the audience. The interlude featured musical performances by the students, and was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise very rainy day!
We are excited to welcome our new artist in residence – Ms Maria Tilt. She will be with us for one term and is looking forward to working with our talented students here at POWIIS. Maria is a UK artist whom attained a first class degree in Fine Art from Aberystwyth University, Wales. Having spent a year as an Art Intern at the British International School Hanoi, Maria is now eager to work with and embrace her experiences here on Penang Island.
