Marcus Sherwood

Principal

Marcus is the Founding Principal of the POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. He has worked as a teacher and leader in schools across the world for nearly 30 years. After qualifying and working in New Zealand, he has worked in schools in the UK, Malaysia and South Korea. His international schools’ experience began at The Alice Smith School in 2007 and it was here he began his association with the FOBISIA organisation, playing a role in the development of the CPD and JAWs initiatives. In 2013, he moved to his first Headship with Dulwich College Seoul. In 2018, he came to Penang where he spent a year assisting in the setting up of POWIIS Primary. The school opened in September 2019 with 385 students. Marcus has taught across the age ranges from KS3- EYFS and filled leadership roles in both the pastoral and curriculum areas. The development of the arts, sport and after-school provision feature prominently in his ‘vision’ of education as does the importance he places on kindness.

Anna Glossop

Deputy Principal

Anna Glossop joins us as Deputy Principal in August 2023 Anna has been a member of the POWIIS family for 8 years, working at POWIIS Balik Pulau as Head of Year 7 and a Design Technology specialist. She obtained her B.A(Hons) in Fine Art from Middlesex University, London in 2008 and has taught Design and Technology and Art for the last eleven years along with holding various pastoral and leadership roles in schools in the UK and Malaysia. In her spare time, Anna enjoys running, illustration and travelling with her family and she is also a POWIIS parent.

Niumai Hamilton-Peach

Assistant Principal (EYFS & KS1)

Niumai brings a wealth of experience to POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. With a background in Early Years Education, Niumai graduated from the University of Wales, UK, with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Early Years Education). Complementing her undergraduate studies, Niumai holds a Diploma in the Montessori Method of Education, laying a strong foundation for her teaching philosophy. She furthered her academic pursuits by obtaining a Master in Education (Childhood and Youth studies) from Oxford Brookes University, enhancing her understanding of children’s social and emotional well-being. Niumai’s dedication to education extends beyond the classroom, having taught internationally for almost 30 years, Niumai brings a global perspective to her teaching practice. These experiences have not only broadened her pedagogical approach but also fuelled her curiosity about different cultures. When not nurturing young minds, Niumai enjoys playing tennis and travelling.

Thomas Warman

Assistant Principal (KS2)

Joining POWIIS in 2020, and with over 10 years experience, Tom is currently Assistant Principal (KS2), Year Lead and Class Teacher. He believes that great teaching and learning is based on positive relationships that are rooted in mutual respect and trust. Moreover, he believes that, at its best, learning in school is linked to the world around us. Graduating from The University of Sheffield with a degree in Human Geography, Tom embarked on a journey to find a career that would fulfill his desire to help others. After working as a Teaching Assistant and subsequently gaining his PGCE from Bishop Grosseteste University, he became a teacher and never looked back (leading Reading, P.E and Immersive Projects in his previous school). Beyond the four walls of the classroom, he is passionate about football, golf, music, and children’s literature.

Niumai Hamilton-Peach

Nursery Leader

Niumai brings a wealth of experience to POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. Errin Attard

Nursery Teacher / Eco-Sustainability Co-ordinator / House Leader (Gandhi)

Errin joined POWIIS Tanjung Bungah in 2020 from Queensland, Australia. Her teaching qualifications include a Diploma in Community Services (Children’s Services), Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle Years), and a Masters of Education (Inclusive and Special Needs and Behavior Management). In her 19 years of experience, Errin has taught children aged 18 months to 7 years in a range of educational settings. She has focused her educational practice on child-led, play and nature-based learning, as well as embedding elements of the Reggio Emilia approach into her teaching. Errin believes all children are competent and capable and their voice is powerful. She strives to encourage and empower each child to embrace the possibilities of their future. Errin loves to be creative and enjoys making her jewellery and clothes in her spare time as well as exploring beautiful Penang with her young daughter.

Sally Gillespie

Reception Leader

Before moving to Penang, Sally was a Reception Class Teacher and Year Group Leader at Discovery Bay International School, Hong Kong. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education Honours Degree. Sally has been teaching for 14 years and has held a range of teaching and leadership roles. Sally’s extensive Early Years knowledge and experience ensures a child-centred and holistic approach to the care and education of her students. She is passionate about supporting children’s personal, social and emotional wellbeing and is committed to working in active partnership with parents, carers and the wider community. Beyond the classroom, Sally has a wide range of interests including hiking, gardening, reading and exploring new countries and cultures.

Jaylyn Burgess

Reception Teacher

Jaylyn is a highly passionate and qualified Early Years educator, who graduated with a dual BSc (Hons) Degree in Criminology and Forensic Science from Keele University, UK and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Early Years Teaching from Sunderland University, UK. She is joining POWIIS from Shanghai, China where she has worked as an Early Years teacher and as a Principal in Julia Gabriel School. Jaylyn is committed to creating effective and engaging learning environments for children that allow them to reach their full potential and become empowered, compassionate and independent individuals. She strongly believes in the importance of parent partnership and catering to children’s individual interests and abilities in their learning experiences. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cycling, traveling, learning new languages, and exploring new cultures.

Sophie Murray

Year 1 Leader

Sophie is a founding member of the POWIIS Tanjung Bungah team. She first graduated with a BA(Hons) in Drama from the University of Northampton before completing a Postgraduate Certificate of Education at Oxford Brookes University. Having grown up and attended international schools herself, Sophie was keen to take her experiences back abroad after having taught in London for two years. Since then, she has taught in Doha, Qatar, before making the move to beautiful Penang. Sophie is very passionate about the earliest years of children’s learning and development, which has seen her focus on teaching from Nursery through to Year 2. Sophie enjoys reading, cross stitch, swimming, playing squash and performing arts.

Mazel Lim

Year 1 Teacher / Read Write Inc. (RWI) Leader

Mazel is a founding member of the POWIIS Tanjung Bungah family, having joined in 2018, her accomplishments include CICTL with Distinction. She is a PGCEI graduate and is currently pursuing a Masters in Education (UK). She was educated at Roedean School, Brighton, UK where she boarded from the age of 9. Mazel lived in the UK for 26 years as well as having worked in many countries, travelling to over twenty international destinations contributing to her global experiences. She loves learning about different cultures and how the world lives. She has several years experience working in International schools and held the post of Milepost 1 leader in an IPC school as well as KS3 Leader post and is currently the schools Read Write Inc Leader. She has taught across the year groups EYFS, KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 & KS5. Her goal is to enable students, famillies to achieve a well-rounded education, and she is passionate in the pursuit of holistic wellbeing. She is always looking for ways to further develop herself especially in the area of Global Citizenship and Arts. Beyond the classroom, she enjoys keeping up with current affairs, humanitarian issues and general global affairs. She loves to create and enjoys art, design, swimming, baking vintage cakes, cycling and most of all family time of which for my three children (currently the eldest has been the Head Boy of POWIIS 2023/24). Mazel is very proud to share that all three children have blossomed tremendously, been well nutured and supported by our POWIIS family.

Coral Anne-Osborn

Year 2 Leader

Coral Osborn is a committed educator with a diverse background. She graduated from the University of Coventry with a Bachelor of Arts in English and TEFL (Hons). She also completed her CELTA, CELTYL, and Postgraduate Certificate of Education International at Nottingham University. Miss Osborn enjoys Storytelling and Drama, which she showcased at the Penang International Storytelling Festivals in 2017 and 2018. Currently, she is the Year Leader for Year 2. Miss Osborn has been part of the Penang community for almost 10 years and loves being involved with the POWIIS Parent Association.

Amy Fraser

Year 2 Teacher / House Leader (Rahman)

Amy Fraser graduated from Newcastle University before going on to qualify as a teacher, receiving her Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Roehampton. Amy grew up in London, England, although her freckles reveal her half-Scottish roots. She worked as a teacher in both South Africa and Burkina Faso before moving back to London- where Amy was leading History and Geography before moving to Penang. Amy is energetic, enthusiastic, and enjoys motivating children through positivity and encouraging their enjoyment of learning. Amy has been working at POWIIS for two years in Year 2 as well as leading Rahman house. In her spare time you can find Amy cycling, rock climbing or trying to visit as many countries as possible!

Amy Dennis

Year 3 Leader / Designated Safeguarding Lead

Amy joined POWIIS in 2020 from her home in rural Dorset in the UK. She graduated from University College Chichester with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Childhood Studies in 2003. She then went to gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Primary Years) from Oxford Brookes University in 2005. From there she has taught in a successful Prep school, teaching in both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two for the last 15 years. She has also been subject lead in a variety of areas including Maths, PSHE and ICT. In her spare time, she loves to apply her craft skills and spend time with her young family.

Simon Burgess

Year 3 Teacher

Simon is a Film and Media graduate from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University and a PGCE holder from Brunel University. Originally from Windsor UK, he has spent 13 years living in Shanghai, China working at Dulwich College where he has gained experience across the EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Simon advocates for critical, creative, and empathetic thinking in children to help them understand and shape our future world. With his experience as a Philosophy for Children facilitator and teacher trainer, he has honed his skills. Simon is excited to join POWIIS Tanjung Bungah in Year 3. In his free time, he enjoys SCUBA diving, hiking, cycling, and training martial arts with his family.

Ransher Kaur Thind

Year 3 Teacher

Ms. Thind joined POWIIS in 2022 as the KS2 homeroom teacher. With a rich array of experience spanning 13 years across diverse year groups from Nursery to Year 4, she has seamlessly transitioned into leadership roles, including Key Stage Coordinator and Year Group Leader. Her international experience enhances her contributions to the dynamic British International school community. Ms. Thind’s Early Childhood Education degree underpins her pedagogy with passion and expertise. Outside the classroom, she cherishes family time at their countryside farmhouse, fostering bonds and creating cherished memories.

Charlotte Jowett

Year 4 Teacher

Charlotte has been working in the UAE for the past two years- before this she worked in a small, village school in England. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Language from Winchester University before embarking on her PGCE at Canterbury University. She has taught students across both primary phases, most recently spending her time with year 2. She is passionate about ensuring her lessons are creative, immersive and meet the needs of all the children.

Katie Biles

Year 4 Teacher / Math Subject Leader

Currently teaching in Year 4 and acting as head of maths, Katie is from a small village in England and received a Bachelor’s degree in Primary Education from Sheffield Hallam University. After graduating, she became a teacher in a school in Barnsley, where she taught Year 5 and held positions including maths lead and Head of PE. In 2020, Katie moved to Shanghai, where she taught Grade 4 in a bilingual school. With 9 years of KS2 experience, Katie is proud to be a part of the POWIIS team, working alongside a passionate and caring team of staff and students. Katie is also excited to continue teaching using the inquiry based learning approach, emphasizing the student’s role in the learning process. Creating meaningful learning experiences for the students, through high expectations and building positive relationships is important in Katie’s classroom every day.

Roger Linton

Year 5 Leader

Mr Linton joined Powiis in August 2022, having previously taught in International Education elsewhere in Penang. He has 20 years teaching experience in the UK in the upper Primary stages and took over as Year 5 Leader in August 2023. Mr Linton lives locally with his wife Marie – a French teacher – and their daughter Sacha, who is a student here at Powiis. In his free time he enjoys swimming, golf and traveling, sampling the delights of Penang’s street food and avoiding jellyfish in the sea off Penang’s beaches with his Dachshund dog Batu.

Kelly Blucher

Year 5 Teacher

Kelly graduated from Monash University in Australia in 2010 and has been teaching in Primary School settings for 13 years. For the last two years, Kelly has been teaching in Doha, Qatar and is tremendously excited to be joining the team at POWIIS TB in August 2023. Kelly’s first primary teaching position was on a beautiful island in Australia called Phillip Island where she taught Years 1 & 2. She then taught Years 3 & 4 in regional Victoria. Kelly moved to England in 2019 where she taught a Year 4 class in Westminster, London. It was a remarkable opportunity which further developed her teaching career in many ways; and sparked her desire to seek international school opportunities. Kelly’s return to Australia enabled her to teach Years 5 & 6 where she was also the senior team leader. Her aim is to provide students with a rich, engaging education which will enable them to reach their full potential and to instil a love of learning in students; guiding and fostering their learning in a supportive environment where all aspects of their wellbeing is nurtured. Outside of the classroom, Kelly enjoys reading, hiking, cooking, theatre and travelling to new places.

Chene Beyers

Year 5 Teacher / House Leader (Mandela)

Chene Beyers graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2017 with an accounting degree, before completing her Post Graduate Certificate in Education in 2018. Her passion in teaching was inspired by experiences supporting children in a local school in South Africa. Chene also completed her TESOL course to better equip herself when teaching children learning English as a second or third language. After 4 years of teaching in South Africa, she moved to China to begin her new teaching adventure. Sadly, this was cut short when the pandemic took hold. After returning to South Africa, she has been teaching children from Year 4- Year 8 at Panorama Primary School in Johannesburg. Chene is very excited to be returning to Asia and is thrilled to be a part of the teaching team at POWIIS Primary. She is an energetic teacher eager to nurture and develop the young people she works.

Alex Montgomery

Year 6 Leader

Alex is a founding member of POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. Before joining POWIIS Alex has taught in London, UK and Doha, Qatar. He graduated from a degree in Sport Studies (BA Hons) from the University of the West of England before completing his PGCE at Oxford Brookes University. Alex enjoys opening his students to experiences outside of the classroom through acitivites such as community service and residentials trips. Away from the classroom, he enjoys trying out new recipes at home from his travels.

Andrew Dennis

Year 6 Teacher / Integrated Curriculum Subject Leader / House Leader (Pankhurst)

Andy graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media and Cultural Studies. He then moved to Oxford Brookes University where he gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Education. He has taught across the primary age range in a variety of Dorset schools, both state and private. Currently he is a teacher in Year 5 and has coordinated Maths, PSHE and ICT. In his spare time, he likes to spend time with his wife and young son as well as walking his dogs, cycling, swimming, listening to music and reading.

Helen Savage

Year 6 Teacher / English Subject Leader

Miss Savage joined POWIIS in 2022 as a class teacher. She now leads English across the school, where she dedicates her time to fostering a love for reading and a passion for writing and public speaking. She graduated from Greenwich University, London in 2016 with a First class Honours degree in Business management. She went on to teach English as a foreign langauge in Girona, Spain; where she discovered her passion for teaching. She then attended UCL Institute of Education, achieving her PGCE in 2018 and going on to teach in outstanding schools across London – leading maths and science. She has embraced Penang as her home and loves nothing more than scooting around the island, enjoying the local culture.

Jasinta Christofi

Year 7 Teacher / Drama Subject Leader

Jasinta Christofi, better known to her students as Miss Jess, is an energetic and dynamic teacher from South Africa, who joined POWIIS TB in 2023. She is currently the Year 7 teacher and Drama lead. Jasinta graduated from The University of Pretoria with a BA Drama degree and went on to complete her Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of South Africa in 2008. Having taught for 15 years, she is excited about taking the POWIIS students from Primary education into the Secondary classroom with the same love, care and connections. Building relationships and a holistic child is at the centre of Jasinta’s teaching philosophy and she believes in building a child’s confidence to be themselves and shine. Jasinta has her roots firmly planted in the performing arts and has a deep love of the stage and singing. Working with the children to develop their passion and love of performing is her goal. In her spare time, Jasinta loves to travel, indulge in the amazing cuisine, and spend time soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches around Malaysia.

Grace Geng Li

Head of Mandarin

Geng Lao Shi/Ms. Grace joined POWIIS TB in 2019 as the Head of Mandarin, bringing with her a rich tapestry of experience since 2007 that spans The British School of Beijing (BSB), Marbella (BSM), Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), Ho Chi Minh City (BIS-HCMC), and now POWIIS in Penang. Her teaching journey has seen her nurture early learners to secondary students, always with a focus on making language learning an engaging, creative, and fun experience. She takes pride in her role, leveraging over a decade and a half of diverse educational experiences to inspire a love for Mandarin and its cultural depths. Beyond the classroom, she cherishes cooking and experimenting with new recipes, and her passion for travel feeds her love for exploring new places. As the leader of our language department, she is excited to blend her personal joys into a holistic approach, aiming to cultivate well-rounded, culturally aware students.

Jessmine Kong

Mandarin Teacher

Jessmine joined POWIIS TB in 2019. She holds a Bachelor’s degree obtained in Malaysia and has continued her professional development by completing the Cambridge International Certificate in Teaching & Learning with distinction. Currently, Jessmine is pursuing her Master’s degree in Education. With almost a decade of teaching experience in Mandarin, ranging from nursery to KS4 levels, Jessmine has honed her skills and pedagogical approach to cater to diverse learners. Before joining POWIIS TB, she served as the Head of Mandarin and held the responsibility of an IGCSE oral examiner. She believes all students are different and unique individuals, each possessing valuable qualities to contribute to their learning experience. Beyond the four walls of the classroom, she loves travelling—not so much for shopping but for nature and culture.

Li Lian Yeong

Mandarin Teacher

Li Lian joined POWIIS TB in 2019 from a Mandarin language school in Penang, where she taught Mandarin and led the team as the Head of School. Before that, she worked at an International School in Penang as a Mandarin teacher and Head of the Mandarin Department. Li Lian has taught students of all ages, from early years to secondary students for over 10 years. After graduating from the National University of Malaysia, she completed her Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers (CIDTT) and obtained Grade 2 Level A in the Putonghua Proficiency Test Certificate in 2014. In the same year, she joined the Teachers of Chinese as a Foreign Language Training Program at Beijing Language and Culture University. In 2017, Li Lian went to Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, to participate in The Education Training Program for Overseas Chinese Teachers and passed the Chinese Teacher Certification Test. Li Lian enjoys learning as much as teaching. Beyond the classroom, she likes listening to music, playing the piano, traveling, swimming, and family time with her children.

Zheng Wan

Mandarin Teacher

Zheng Wan joined the POWIIS TB Mandarin department in 2020. With almost a decade of experience at the British International School Kuala Lumpur, she prioritizes interactive and culturally immersive Chinese teaching. Zheng Wan graduated from China with a Bachelor’s degree in “Journalism and Creative Writing in Chinese” and completed her Master’s degree at Southern Cross University, Australia. During her tenure at the British International School, she obtained her Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) from the University of Nottingham, UK. Outside of work, Zheng Wan enjoys traveling and reading in her spare time.

Asta Hodgson

Head of Music

Asta has been Head of Music at POWIIS TB since it first opened in 2019. Prior to that she was working in Yangon, Myanmar, and her first international role away from the UK was Moscow, where she stayed for four years. She is highly qualified in both classroom and group instrumental teaching, and feels strongly about using creative approaches in order to nurture creativity itself. Her most recent accomplishment was to complete an MA in Psychology of Music in Performance, Education, and Wellbeing with the University of Sheffield, which she did so with distinction. When not geeking about music and teaching, she can be found cooking, creating, or enjoying a glass of wine.

Sheuezei Hong

Music Teacher

Sheuezei Hong, a music specialist at POWIIS TB since 2020, previously instructed at Cempaka Cheras, Selangor, affiliated with the Cempaka Group of Schools. With over a decade of experience teaching early years and primary students, she holds a Bachelor of Music from University Putra Malaysia. Dedicated to music education, she earned a Diploma in Kodaly Pedagogy from the Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of the Liszt Academy in Hungary in 2014. Miss Hong actively engages in workshops and conferences, recently presenting at the 1st Malaysia Kodaly National Conference. Passionate about nurturing children’s love for music, she enjoys nature walks, yoga, reading, attending concerts, and exploring fashion and makeup.

Ju Lin Teoh

Music Teacher

Ju Lin Teoh, an accomplished educator, joined POWIIS in March 2021, initially covering maternity leave of a colleague before transitioning to a part-time role in the Mandarin Department. In August 2022, she joined the Music Department. She brings with her a Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts in Music from the University of Malaya and a decade of coaching experience from Han Chiang Private High School’s Choir. With a passion for music evident in her choir conducting background, she also enjoys playing the piano. Beyond her professional pursuits, Ju Lin embrace hobbies like learning new languages, adding depth to her already dynamic persona.

Silvia Vuong

Science Subject Leader

Ms Vuong joined POWIIS in 2018 as a teacher of science. Prior to moving to Penang, she spent over a decade teaching science in countries such as: Tanzania, China and Australia. When she is not teaching, she enjoys travelling and experiencing different cultures.

Benji Wong

Head of Aquatics

Benji became a part of our PE and Aquatics team as a swimming teacher in the academic year of 2021-22. With four years of experience as a swim coach at SSA Smart Swim Academy in Selangor, including two years affiliated with GEMS International School Tropica Metropark. During his tenure, he established both primary and secondary school swim squads, guiding numerous students to compete at the Selangor State Swimming Competition. A graduate of Tunku Abdul Rahman College with a bachelor’s degree in Corporate Administration, Benji is eager to share his passion for swimming with our students at POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. Beyond swimming, Benji’s love for sports extends to basketball, volleyball, cycling, running, badminton, and esports, particularly FIFA.

Hannah Miller

Head of PE

Hannah has 15 years of experience working in the UK state and independent education sectors, supporting young people to achieve their sporting potential. Hannah’s passion and first-hand experience from a young age as a competitive netball player, football player and athlete ignited her desire to pursue a career in physical education immediately after completing her A-Level studies. She graduated from the University of Brighton in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Physical Education with QTS. Since, she has actively sought out opportunities to lead and manage successful, multi-facet sport and physical education departments across the 3-19 age range. To extend her skills further and develop her passion for the theory underpinning performance and physical activity she has proactively taken on the additional responsibilities of GCSE PE Practical Performance Visiting Moderator and Examiner to complement her teaching. Hannah is ready to fully embrace life in Penang and join the POWIIS community with her daughter after visiting the island in 2018. She maintains a keen interest in football, netball, running, golf and snowboarding and is looking forward to exploring the beauty of Southeast Asia.

Suresh Kumar

PE Teacher

Suresh previously taught Primary P.E class at Crescendo HELP International School, Johor, Malaysia. He has enjoyed teaching PE and he has been a dedicated, proactive member of the P.E team for a year. He has enjoyed teaching P.E within CHIS and has found great success with inter school sporting competitions. He is an avid football fan and also has been coaching football to all age groups. During his time in CHIS Suresh, has successfully completed his CICTL. He is passionate about education and is an eager sportsman. Beyond the classroom Suresh has a wide range of interests including daily gym sessions, swimming, and gardening. He favourites past times is to spending quality time with his family.

Hyun Ju Yang

EAL Teacher

Hyunju had been teaching EAL and working as an AEN support teacher at SRI KDU International School in Kuala Lumpur before relocating to Penang in 2022. Over the past decade, she has taught English and Korean in South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia, also receiving an “Ofsted outstanding” rating during her time in London. She gained a Master of Education degree from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Korea. Hyunju also holds a TESOL certification, further enhancing her expertise in language instruction. With a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by EAL learners, Hyunju is particularly attuned to their academic and social needs. Her empathy with student experiences fuels her love in helping them overcome these challenges so they can quickly and comfortably adapt, by providing a fun, sociable, and supportive launchpad to the wider school community. She is very excited to bring her passion, energy, and commitment to this role and support the growth and success of EAL students at POWIIS Tanjung Bungah.

Florence Raj

EAL Teacher

Florence, a passionate educator, holds a B.Ed in English Language and Literature. After gaining teaching experience in public school and private tutoring settings, she embarked on her journey with POWIIS Tg. Bungah in 2019, contributing to its inaugural year as a Teaching Assistant. After two enriching years, in 2021 she transitioned into an EAL teaching role, extending her expertise to support AEN children. She is driven by her fervent belief in inclusive education, striving to make English accessible to learners of diverse linguistic backgrounds. Beyond the classroom, she indulges in reading, board games, and museum visits, fostering a well-rounded approach to learning and leisure.

Chean Yen Tan

EAL Teacher

Chean Yen enjoys designing engaging learning experiences tailored to her diverse students’ needs. She varies her teaching approaches but focuses on creativity, collaborative skills, and learner-centered learning, using technology and real-world examples. She considers learning beyond the classroom and aims to inspire her students’ love of learning by addressing their needs. A graduate of Tunku Abdul Rahman University with a degree in Communications, she completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Education at the University of Malaya. Her experiences include instructing languages, design, and technology subjects in public secondary schools. She actively seeks out new knowledge and enjoys exploring nature and learning languages beyond the classroom.

Farah Azmi

Bahasa Melayu Teacher

Ms. Farah has been an integral part of POWIIS since its inception in 2019, bringing her expertise as a Bahasa Melayu teacher. She is a graduate of Sultan Idris Royal Education University, Malaysia, and embarked on her teaching journey in the National School system, both at the primary and secondary levels, before discovering her passion for teaching in the International Secondary School setting. With several years of experience under her belt, Ms. Farah specializes in preparing students for SPM and IGCSE examinations. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Farah cherishes spending quality time with her family. She finds joy in watching movies and indulging in a good book, reflecting her passion for storytelling and culture. Ms. Farah’s dedication to her students and her vibrant personality make her a beloved member of the POWIIS community.

A.J. Ocampo

Art and Design Subject Leader

Mr. AJ has served as the leader of the Art & Design department since the inception of POWIIS TB in 2019. A graduate of Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Industrial Design at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, he has carried his passion in the field of arts and design to teaching. With a rich tapestry of over ten years of experience in art education across both private and international school settings, Mr. AJ has crafted a bespoke art curriculum at POWIIS TB. This curriculum serves as a nurturing ground for students’ knowledge, skills, attitude, and creativity, fostering their holistic development as an artist. His mission is to facilitate each child’s journey of self-discovery in the realm of creativity by exposing them to a variety of artistic forms. In his philosophy, he echoes the words of Picasso: “Every child is an artist.”

Doreen Cheah

Art Teacher

Mrs. Doreen is the Art teacher in POWIIS. She has been part of the school since the 2020 academic year. Her passion is to inspire children to use their full potential to be creative. Her educational background includes a Diploma in Interior Design and an Advanced Diploma in Special Education. She has worked as an Interior Designer across a range of projects. Travel inspires her tremendously in her work. She is always looking for ways to incorporate what she sees around the world into the spaces she is designing. Beyond the classroom, Doreen has a wide range of interests including art and craft, traveling, running, swimming, and reading.

Lydia Loh

Librarian

Ms. Lydia became part of POWIIS in 2019. As a librarian for the past five years, she have immersed herself in the world of literature, connecting readers with the perfect books, organizing engaging events, and fostering a love of reading within the community. It’s been a fulfilling journey, dedicated to the enrichment of minds and the celebration of knowledge. Being a librarian is not just about organizing shelves; it involves guiding readers of all ages to discover new worlds within the pages of books.

Beth Sivanatham

School Nurse

In 2019, Beth transitioned into the role of a school nurse in POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. She accumulated extensive experience in the healthcare industry by dedicating 15 years of her career as a registered staff nurse and ventured into entrepreneurship by owning and managing an elderly home for 5 years. In addition to her clinical background, in 2022, she expanded her skill set by becoming a certified first aid trainer. This certification enables her to not only administer first aid when needed but also to educate others on proper first aid techniques, thereby enhancing safety within the school community.In 2023, she expanded her professional portfolio by taking on the role of an HRDC (Human Resource Development Council) trainer. As an HRDC trainer, she likely utilizes her expertise in nursing and healthcare alongside her training skills to deliver impactful educational programs. In her spare time, Beth finds joy and relaxation in indulging her hobbies of cooking, cycling, and fitness.

Yogambiga A/P P. Vadamalai

Teaching Assistant

Ambiga joined us in August 2019 as Teaching Assistant. It almost been 7 years as a part of POWIIS family. She obtained her Bachelor of Education in Mathematics and secondary specialist in Calculus from University Tun Abdul Razak in year 2009. She completed her Masters Of Early Childhood (Special Needs) in year 2023 from Open University Malaysia. Ambiga has 15 years of teaching experience. She has taught various age group from primary till foundation programmes. She believes when a child makes mistakes it allows them to learn. Ambiga is a classical dancer and Taekwando Black Belt. She enjoys listening to melodious music and travelling with family.

Bharati A/P R Gunasekaran

Bharati joined POWIIS family on November 2020. Its almost 4 years her journey in POWIIS Tanjung Bungah. She graduated in Bachelor of Education in Language and Literature from University Tun Abdul Razak in year 2012. Bharati had more than 10 years of teaching experiences, for the primary year groups in English. She strongly believes education is the pathway for success. Bharati spends her leisure time in dancing, travelling and outdoor games. She is a sports car enthusiast.

Risha is born in Pahang and raised in Penang. She joined POWIIS family in August 2019. She was from Al Noor International School, Kuala Lumpur an Arabian school as a Head of History teacher for secondary level. Risha graduated from University Malaysia Sabah with a Bachelor of Sociology and Social Science in Anthropology and secondary specialist in History. She had 9 years of teaching experience. Risha loves travelling to historical countries and reading books. She strongly believes there is no better teacher than history in determining the future.

Bhavitira A/P Kalimuthu

Bhavitira Kalimuthu, better known as Ms. Vitra, was born and raised in Penang. With a Master’s degree in Education and over 12 years of teaching experience, she has worked with diverse age groups and children from various backgrounds. Before joining POWIIS, Ms. Vitra served as an Assistant Principal in a Malaysian preschool. Her passion for teaching led her to seek opportunities in an international school setting, which brought her to POWIIS in 2019. In addition to her role at POWIIS, Ms. Vitra also works as a part-time lecturer at Wawasan Open University.Ms. Vitra is deeply committed to education and is fluent in Mandarin, a skill that has proven invaluable in fostering better communication with students. As an educator, her goal is to cultivate knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes in her students. She believes in integrating socio-cultural values, ethics, and rights into lesson plans and classroom activities, while also providing individualized support to help students achieve their learning goals.Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Vitra is an avid language learner, proficient in six different languages. In her free time, she indulges in her hobbies of baking, dancing, and reading books. Her love for animals extends to caring for stray dogs and other animals in need, reflecting her compassionate nature both inside and outside the classroom.

Nur Azlina Binti Mohamed Iqbal

Nur Azlina Mohamed Iqbal better known to the students as Ms. Lina , is an passionate and committed teacher. Ms. Lina is born and bred in Penang. She joined POWIIS since its inception in 2019. She embarked on her academic journey by pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Education specialising in English (Language and Literature) at University Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR). She has been in the teaching industry for more than 10 years with experience being a Government School Teacher and in a Tuition Centre. She possesses genuine enthusiasm and passion in teaching English,Bahasa and Mathematics for various year groups more than 10 years .Teaching has become her passion since she was small as she always learned new things and loved to provide social guidance to the students. Apart from that, she is happy to see her students grow in knowledge, confidence and skills and keeps learning new things every day. In her spare time, Ms. Lina enjoys spending quality time with family.

Puspanjli Shanmugam also known as Ms. Anjli by her working colleagues and students is a passionate and driven teacher. Born and raised in the heart of Malaysia, Penang. She began her studies and completed her Diploma in the year 2014, and persuaded her bachelors In Teaching As a Second Language also known as Tesl in the year 2018. She has been teaching for the past 7 years in Penang. She has taught students from a wide range of age groups and backgrounds. She trusts the concept of building a bridge between students’ academic and environment is the key for excellent learning. Ms.Anjli believes in providing safe and fun learning space that allow children and teachers to communicate freely and exchange opinion in their learning process. Her passion also inspires her to develop her teaching skills and ideology towards teaching principle by coaching Speech & Drama and Public speaking classes during the weekends. Moreover, She enjoys indulging herself into mouth watering desserts and pastries in the weekends, not putting behind her passion for dance as she coaches students in Eca’s for school assemblies.

Priyadharsheniy, known as Ms Priya, is a dedicated teaching assistant with a passion for nurturing young minds. She was born and raised in the beautiful island, Penang. Graduating from the University of Malaysia Kelantan with a degree in Bio-Industrial Technology in 2018, she embarked on a fulfilling journey in the field of education. With seven years of experience as a teacher, she brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the classroom. She has taught students from broad range of age groups. Ms Priya has passion and interest for Maths and Science. She loves teaching students Maths and Science very much. During her free time, Ms Priya loves to read novels, watch movies and she also loves to cook. Ms Priya also loves spending wonderful time with her friends and family.

Greetings! I’m Sinthu. Originally from Perak, Malaysia, I’ve found a second home in the vibrant communities of Penang. Since 2019, I’ve been dedicated to the noble role of a teaching assistant. Completed Bachelor’s degree in Human Development with a specialization in Developmental Psychology from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Currently, I’m pursuing a Master’s in Education with a focus on Mathematics. When I’m not immersed in the world of academia, you’ll likely find me indulging in my love for outdoor activities. From swimming in the pool to conquering scenic hiking trails, I find solace and inspiration in nature’s embrace. These adventures not only rejuvenate my spirit but also instill in me a sense of resilience and determination, qualities I aim to impart to my students both inside and outside the classroom.

She has always had a love for working with children and finds great joy in helping them learn and grow. Her experience in various educational settings has equipped her with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in her role as a Teaching Assistant. Her passion for teaching extends beyond the classroom. She enjoys incorporating English games into her lessons to make learning fun and engaging for her students. Corina A/P Ram Kumar

Teaching Assistant

Corina was born and raised in a small, local town situated within the suburb of Air Itam. She grew up knowing the difficulties that common kids these days are blessed not to endure which propelled her to become independent, strong and witty. Corina is also an excellent Malay novel writer and loves reading as it’s her go to, as and when she has time to spare. Corina loves the great outdoors and travelling to widen her view on life. Through her persistent attitude, Corina graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology and worked at a retail outlet part-time knowing she was destined for far greater and rewarding occupation. Corina’s dream of becoming an educator eventually came true when she got the opportunity to work with Penang’s finest, Prince of Wales Island International School. Corina became a Teaching Assistant and has loved every minute being able to interact and educate children under her umbrella. Corina also loves to dance as she finds it a good way to release stress and to better express yourself. Corina also manages to do Yoga as it helps her to tone down after a long day at work.
