The Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) was established, and is legally owned and operated by MTT Learning Academy Sdn Bhd (MTT Learning).
We offer a broad and balanced education based on a British-style curriculum for students aged 3 to 19. Here on Penang island, we have two unique campuses. One in Tanjung Bungah that caters to students aged 3 to 13 and the other in Balik Pulau, with boarding facilities, for students aged 11 to 19. The Board of Governors
The Board of Governors is appointed by MTT Learning Academy. It includes representatives of the shareholders of MTT Learning Academy and representatives of the Board of Directors.
The Company may appoint new members from time to time who are mutual representatives of commercial, educational or professional trades in Malaysia. The current Chairperson of the Board of Governors is Datin Seri Saisunee Ong who is also a Director of MTT Learning.
The Board of Governors is responsible for protecting and ensuring the continual development and existence of the School. It is the role of the Board to provide strategic guidance for the School and to effectively oversee and review the School’s management. This includes but is not restricted to the management of budgets and financial performance of the School, appointments of the CEO and Principal(s) and long term strategic plans.
The Board of Governors’ main priority is to set policies whilst the CEO and Principal(s) are responsible for implementing these policies. The Board is not involved in the day-to-day management of the School beyond the supervisory level. Communications with the school and staff are made through the Chief Executive Officer and Principal(s).
Datin Seri Saisunee Ong
Chairperson
Datin Seri Saisunee Ong was born in Bangkok, Thailand and has been residing in Penang , Malaysia for more than 40 years. Datin Seri started the Property development division 18 years ago together with Dato Seri Kenny Ong and she currently holds the position of Executive Director of MTT Properties & Development Sdn Bhd which spearheaded the vision of the largest township development, Botanica CT in Balik Pulau, Penang. Datin Seri Ong was also primarily involved with the construction of the Prince of Wales Island International School and was part of the initial group of governing members from the school’s inception. She is currently the Chairman of the Board of Governors of MTT Learning Academy Sdn. Bhd.
Dato Seri Kenny Ong
Dato Seri Kenny Ong was born in Penang and is an entrepreneurial figure active in various fields of business. He holds the position of Group Chairman of the MTT Group of Companies which apart from logistics, the MTT Group is also involved in Property development; Botanica C.T. and Education; the Prince of Wales Island International School and the Prince of Wales Island International Primary School as well as Penang’s 1st Integrated Senior Living Resort ; Eden At Botanica CT. He also holds the position of Group Executive Chairman of MTT Shipping Sdn Bhd, the largest domestic shipping company in Malaysia. Chairman of Greenpen Freight Services Sdn Bhd, RTW Logistics Corp (M) Sdn Bhd, Perceptive Logistics Sdn Bhd and Persila Sdn Bhd, Greenpen Logistics Sdn Bhd, He is also active in community activities. He currently holds the position of President of the Penang Rifle Club, President of the Penang Fencing Association, Immediate Past President of Majlis Dato Dato Negeri Pulau Pinang, Honorary President of the Logisticians Association of Malaysia, Board of Trustees of the Dr Sun Yat-Sen Museum Foundation and Bukit Bendera Caring Society Penang Trustee Board.
Dato Seri Siew Hai Wong
Dato Seri Siew Hai (SH) Wong has 29 years of working experience in the electronics industry. Currently, he is involved in the electronics industry as President of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association since 2021 and Chairman of the E&E Productivity Nexus. He is also a Board member of Penang Tech Centre and the Penang Science Council and pioneered the set up of Tech Dome Penang, the first science discovery centre in Penang, to inspire children and students to pursue science and engineering. In education, Dato Seri Wong is a member of the Board of Governor of UOW(M)KDU and a trustee of Yayasan Universiti Multimedia (YUM). He also serves as a committee member of the Wawasan Open University Education Foundation and is a Board member of Aik Hua Chinese Primary School. From 2001 to 2006, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Kolej Universiti Technologi Tun Hussein Onn. He was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Multimedia University (MMU) from 2017 to 2020. In charity, Dato Seri Wong is the President of the Penang Welfare Association for intellectually challenged children and Charter President of Kiwanis Club of Penang Central.

Mr Chan Huan Hin
Mr Chan Huan Hin is the current Director of Priority Synergy Sdn Bhd and a Director of MTT Shipping Sdn Bhd. He joins the board of governors with a wealth of knowledge in the logistics industry. His daughter Chan Mi Chween was also a POWIIS alumni. Mr Chan was also a boarder in Scotch College in Adelaide in 1979 and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Adelaide.
Ms Clarice Ong
Ms Clarice Ong is a Geography and Social Economics graduate from Queen Mary, University of London. She later went on to obtain her MSc in Finance and Investment in BPP Professional Education. Ms Ong spent four years as a Technical Analyst in Stockcube Research Limited which was based on the King’s Road in London. She later returned to Malaysia and joined MTT Shipping Sdn Bhd as a Management Trainee and is currently the Internal Audit Manager for MTT Shipping. In 2017, Ms Ong also took over the overseeing of all finances for the MTT Group of Companies and is currently the Director of Finance and Treasury for the Group.
Ms Elysia Ong
Ms Elysia Ong is the current CEO of MTT Learning Academy. A law graduate from King’s College of London, Ms Ong completed her Masters in Law with merit at King’s College in 2005 and thereon completed her training contract with DKLM Solicitors, a boutique law firm in London. Ms Ong qualified as a Solicitor in December 2009 and also obtained her MBA from Imperial College London Business School in 2016. Ms Ong returned to Penang in 2010 and joined MTT Learning Academy as the Business Manager of the pioneering team who established The Prince of Wales Island International School. She was then promoted to CEO of MTT Learning in 2015. Ms Ong is married and has 2 young children. Ms Ong is also currently the Director of Corporate Strategy and Legal Affairs for the MTT Group of Companies.

Dato Dr Ooi Kee Beng
Dato’ Dr OOI KEE BENG is Executive Director of Penang Institute, member of the Penang State Government’s Penang2030 Advisory Committee, and board member of Digital Penang and St Xavier’s Institution. He entered think tank work in 2004 and was Deputy Director of Singapore’s ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in 2011-2017, where he remains attached as Visiting Senior Fellow. He is a member of the Advisory Panel for the National Higher Education Research Institute (IPPTN), Universiti Sains Malaysia; Adjunct Professor and member of the Industry Advisory Committee (School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Taylor’s University; Honorary Fellow, Center for Policy Research and International Studies (CenPRIS, USM). He received his PhD in Sinology from Stockholm University and lectured at Stockholm University, National University of Singapore and City University of Hong Kong on Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, General Knowledge of China, History and Politics in Malaysia. He is founder-editor of ISEAS Perspective, the policy brief series published by Singapore’s ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute where he was long-term Deputy Director; and of ISSUES Policy Briefs and Penang Monthly, which are the major publications of Penang Institute. He is a monthly columnist for The Edge Malaysia. His most influential publications include The Eurasian Core and Its Edges: Dialogues with Wang Gungwu on the History of the World; The Reluctant Politician: Tun Dr Ismail and His Time; As Empires Fell: The Life and Times of H.S. Lee, the First Finance Minister of Malay, Yusof Ishak: A Man of Many Firsts; In Lieu of Ideology: An Intellectual Biography of Goh Keng Swee, and; Lim Kit Siang: Defying the Odds.
