Dinah Hawtree
Principal
Mrs Hawtree joined POWIIS in August 2020. Her previous leadership experience spans 6 schools and 3 continents, having led schools in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, as well as in Asia (in the Philippines, Thailand and China). Outside of school, Mrs Hawtree enjoys sport; she plays rugby, squash and badminton, scuba-dives and cycles, and she also appreciates the arts; she loves impressionist art and musical theatre.

Business Manager
Having worked with a number of multinational companies in both Malaysia and the UK, Mr. Lyons brings with him a wealth of experience in business management, operations, and team leadership. His collaborative style, built on empowerment and teamwork, introduces a fresh dynamic to the Administration Team at POWIIS. As a British–Malaysian dual citizen, Mr. Lyons values both cultural perspectives and applies this global outlook to his professional and personal life. Outside of work, he enjoys spending quality time with his family and staying informed on international current affairs.

Deputy Principal
Mrs Clarke joined POWIIS in 2015. Prior to moving to Penang she worked in Kuala Lumpur and the UK, where she taught maths and further maths from key stage 3 to A Level. Outside of school Mrs Clarke enjoys travelling, hiking and completing jigsaw puzzles.
Jenn Blais
Deputy Principal
Ms Blais joined POWIIS in 2021. Prior to moving to Malaysia, she was living in Thailand and has taught students from KS2 through KS4. Outside of school, Ms Blais enjoys cooking, swimming and all things theatre.
Peter Roberts
Deputy Principal
Mr Roberts is the Deputy Principal and teacher of Physical Education. He used to be the Deputy Head at a British international school in Hong Kong and has previously worked in China and the UK. Mr Roberts joined Penang with his wife Rachel, who will be teaching at our Tanjung Bungah campus.

Ms Galy has been part of POWIIS since 2016 as a teacher of modern foreign languages. Prior to joining our school, she has worked six years in China and two years in Malaysia, teaching French to young adults and children. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and swimming, and discovering more about Malaysia and South-East Asia.
Sam Shadbolt
Head of Key Stage 4
Mr Shadbolt teaches Science specialising in Chemistry, and he is the Head of Key Stage 4 at POWIIS. He worked at a school in Andorra, and has previously worked in Bermuda and the UK.
Keigan Page
Head of Key Stage 5 / Sixth Form
Mr Page teaches Drama and Media Studies and he is also Head of Sixth Form. He taught aboard at the Alexander von Humboldt II, a tall ship which was circumnavigating the Atlantic with a group of Sixth Formers connecting their education to the communities and cultures we interacted with and has previously worked in Canada, Vietnam, and Qatar.

Matthew Paterson
Deputy Head of KS3
Mr Paterson teaches English literature and language, and is the Deputy Head of Key Stage 3. He worked at a school in Muscat, Oman, and has previously worked in a number of schools in the UK and Thailand.
Poppy Ogilvie
Deputy Head of KS4
Miss Ogilvie joins us as Deputy Head of PE, and Deputy Head of KS4, building on her extensive experience in both the UK and Australia. She is well-versed in organising whole-school events and has led annual ski trips across Europe. Outside the classroom, Miss Ogilvie is passionate about sport. She actively participates in volleyball, football, cricket and scuba diving, and competes in HYROX fitness competitions across the world.

Ms Bennett joined POWIIS in 2016. She had previously taught in Kazakhstan and the USA, where she worked as an English and special education teacher. She enjoys the performing arts, American football, and spending time with her children.
Mr Eccles has been at POWIIS since 2014. Prior to moving to Penang, he completed his training in the UK and spent three years working as a volunteer teaching mathematics in schools in the US and the UK. Mr Eccles has a passion for football – watching, playing and coaching – and has attended coaching courses in both the UK and Barcelona.

Ms Khoo teaches Physical Education and serves as a tutor in the girls’ boarding hall. She brings warmth, energy, and a strong focus on student wellbeing. Passionate about helping boarders grow into confident, independent individuals, she enjoys building connections, encouraging healthy routines, and supporting each student’s personal journey.

Mrs O’Hanlon joined POWIIS in 2021. She previously worked for 12 years in the UK, teaching art and photography. She enjoys travelling, visiting art galleries, hiking and spending time at the beach collecting shells and looking for interesting creatures with her two children.

Mr Odeny joined POWIIS in 2016. Prior to moving to Penang, he spent 15 years teaching MYP Integrated Humanities, IBDP Business management, IGCSE Business Studies and Economics and Global Perspectives in Botswana, Kenya and Kazakhstan. Outside school, Mr Odeny enjoys spending time with his family, as well as watching football, travelling and riding motorcycles.
Mr Llewelyn has been at POWIIS since 2020. He is the assistant curriculum leader and also boarding hall tutor. Before moving to Penang, he taught Spanish, French, Japanese and EAL in Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong. Mr Llewellyn is a PADI Assistant diving Instructor and is keen to enthuse members of the POWIIS community about the joys of the underwater world. Mr Llewellyn also enjoys cycling, swimming and of course the culinary delights of Penang.
Mr Ibrahim joined POWIIS in 2011. He had previously worked in the government school, where he had taught both English and Science at the primary level. Outside school Mr Ibrahim enjoys fishing, indoor games, and gardening, as well as spending time with his two cats.

Mr Lim joined POWIIS in 2014. Before joining POWIIS, he worked as a civil engineer, since joining POWIIS he had taught both maths and physics from KS3 to A level. Outside school Mr Lim enjoys hiking, scuba diving and stargazing as well as spending time playing percussion in various orchestras.

Mr Bekker joins POWIIS as the University and Careers Guidance Counsellor in August 2023. He has taught in Public and Private schools in Pretoria – South Africa as well as in Doha, Qatar and Ipoh, Malaysia before moving to Penang. Peter Bekker enjoys family time, exploring the outdoors, enjoying good coffee and preparing delicious food.

Mr. Brett joins us as the EAL Coordinator. With 20 years of experience in education across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, he has served as a teacher, lecturer, and manager. Outside of school, Mr. Brett enjoys cooking, reading, running, hiking, and following his beloved Manchester United.
Mr Megaan joins POWIIS in August 2023 as a Special Education Need Teacher Assistant (SENTA). He worked as a Special Education Needs (SEN) teacher in his previous school for five years, developing broad knowledge and abilities in this field. Outside of school, Mr Megaan enjoys playing sports, football, and badminton. He also enjoys music and playing instruments.

Mr Chandler joins POWIIS from Valencia in Spain to take up the role of Extended Learning Coordinator and teacher of Business Studies. He also teaches geography and coordinates the Duke of Edinburgh Award and has previously worked in the UK and Mexico.

Ms Casaccio joined POWIIS in Jan 2017. Prior to joining POWIIS she worked at the University of Catania in Italy and worked in Australia prior to that. In her free time she enjoys reading and hiking.
Mr Larkin joins us to teach physics, and as House Leader for Aqua. He has taught at both GCSE and A-level at two different schools in the United Kingdom, demonstrating a strong commitment to science education. Mr. Larkin maintains a diverse range of hobbies; he is an avid scuba diver, exploring the underwater world, and enjoys cycling and embracing the outdoors as well as video gaming and the strategic miniatures game ‘Warhammer’.

Ms Lu teaches Mandarin. She’s the Assistant Curriculum Leader – Languages and Culture at POWIIS, as well as serving as a House Leader for Ignis. She has 11 years of teaching experience in Malaysia and China.
Sam Ghanbari

Mr Ghanbari began his teaching career in Japan before completing his training in the UK. He joins us as an English and Media teacher and Head of Terra. He recently held similar roles at an international school in Kota Kinabalu. He enjoys gaming, reading, travelling, and going to the gym.
Dr Tavis Ryan King is an expert cross-cultural psychologist and has worked as a counsellor and GCSE psychology teacher at POWIIS since 2023. Previously, he lectured on British Psychological Society accredited degree programmes at international universities and taught across GCSE through PhD levels. His research interests include personality theories, psychometrics and student feedback. Dr King thoroughly enjoys tabletop roleplaying games.

Mr Davis joins us to teach Design Technology, and as Deputy Curriculum Leader for the Arts. He brings a wealth of experience to the Design Technology department, having dedicated over 30 years in Wales and Thailand to inspiring students through hands-on learning and creative problem-solving. He can often be found restoring classic vehicles, a hobby that perfectly complements his technical expertise.

Mr. Hope joins us as an Art teacher. He has been teaching Art and Design for over twenty years and previously lectured in Further and Higher Education in England before moving to the international teaching circuit in 2016. He has since led Art Departments at several international schools in Saudi Arabia, China, and Dubai. Mr. Hope holds a First-Class Honours degree in Fine Art, a Master’s in Fine Art Practices, and a PGCE.
“Art and Design is such a critical subject in all schools that understand the importance of creative thinking.” This creative thinking, he believes, underpins many subjects across the school.

Ms Elliott joins us as Director of Performing Arts & PAA. She has over 15 years of experience and is currently pursuing a PhD in Education, researching creativity in learning. Outside school, she is a passionate musician who enjoys swimming, hiking, cooking, and exploring cultures through travel and the arts.

Ms Kemp is a passionate Design & Technology teacher with over 20 years’ experience in the UK. She has led STEM initiatives and award-winning ‘F1 in Schools’ teams, and co-founded Rarefish Films in Canada. Ms Kemp is fluent in Vietnamese and enjoys skiing, swimming, tennis, and ice skating.

Mr Conrad King joined POWIIS in 2024 and supports the Arts Curriculum in design & technology education and as the audio, video and media specialist. Previously, Mr King worked as a technician and sound engineer in London and academically researched in musicology. He also teaches guitar and bass instrumentation. His hobbies include song-writing, motorcycling the Malaysian countryside and weight training.

Ms Amsdorf is the Humanities Curriculum Leader and she teaches psychology. She has previously worked in the UK and Mexico. She moved to Penang with her husband who is working at POWIIS in the role of Extended Learning Coordinator.
David Griffiths
Deputy Curriculum Leader/Teacher
Mr Griffiths joined POWIIS in 2023, bringing a wealth of experience as a teacher and school leader from across Britain, Brunei, and Malaysia. A specialist in Southeast Asian and Chinese History, he has taught History at both IB and A Level, alongside Geography and Humanities at IGCSE level. Throughout his career, David has held several leadership roles, including Head of History, Head of Humanities, and Boarding Housemaster. He enjoys swimming and hiking.
Adam Perrell
Assistant Curriculum Leader / Teacher
Mr Perrell joins us to teach economics and as Assistant Curriculum Leader for Humanities. He has taught in several different countries, contexts, and conditions: from bamboo hut schools in Ghana to international institutions in China, Myanmar, and Thailand. When he is not teaching, Mr. Perrell enjoys long distance running, dancing, reading, creative writing, and meditative practices

Mr. Lim has been teaching geography at POWIIS ever since it welcomed its first cohort of students in 2011, and was key in establishing the school as the regional host of the World Scholar’s Cup program. While this was his first experience working in an international school setting, he has previously taught Malay Language, geography and history at local secondary schools in Penang. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Lim enjoys travelling and singing as well as writing the occasional film review.

Ms Churchyard joins us to teach history. Her career to date has taken her to classrooms in South Korea and South Africa, where she has also led and coached debating teams, drawing on several years of experience in competitive and academic debate. She brings a dynamic, inquiry-driven approach to her teaching. Outside the classroom, she enjoys salsa dancing, hiking, rock climbing, yoga, and reading. She also relishes philosophical discussions and meaningful conversations that spark curiosity and critical thinking.
Dr Tavis King
Teacher
Dr Tavis Ryan King is an expert cross-cultural psychologist and has worked as a counsellor and GCSE psychology teacher at POWIIS since 2023. Previously, he lectured on British Psychological Society accredited degree programmes at international universities and taught across GCSE through PhD levels. His research interests include personality theories, psychometrics and student feedback. Dr King thoroughly enjoys tabletop roleplaying games.

Miss Butler joins us as Deputy Curriculum Leader for Languages & Culture. Most recently she has been an English Faculty Leader in Manchester and has a strong background in Language and Linguistics. Her energetic teaching inspires a love for literature and drama. Outside school, she enjoys fitness, travel, cooking, and quality time with her son and family.

Mr Llewelyn has been at POWIIS since 2020. He is the assistant curriculum leader and also boarding hall tutor. Before moving to Penang, he taught Spanish, French, Japanese and EAL in Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong. Mr Llewellyn is a PADI Assistant diving Instructor and is keen to enthuse members of the POWIIS community about the joys of the underwater world. Mr Llewellyn also enjoys cycling, swimming and of course the culinary delights of Penang.

Mr Paterson teaches English literature and language, and is the Deputy Head of Key Stage 3. He worked at a school in Muscat, Oman, and has previously worked in a number of schools in the UK and Thailand.

Ms Tan, originally a Penangite, and an international school student herself, Ms Tan graduated from NYU with a Double BA in Literature and Theatre, and has completed a PGCE at Liverpool John Moores University. She joins us to teach English and EAL, having taught previously in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. Ms Tan speaks fluent Mandarin, and outside of work she enjoys scuba diving and yoga.
Ms Bennett joined POWIIS in 2016. She had previously taught in Kazakhstan and the USA, where she worked as an English and special education teacher. She enjoys the performing arts, American football, and spending time with her children.
Mr. Brett joins us as the EAL Coordinator. With 20 years of experience in education across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, he has served as a teacher, lecturer, and manager. She actively participates in volleyball, football, cricket and scuba diving, and competes in HYROX fitness competitions across the world.

Datin Seri Saisunee Ong
Datin Seri Saisunee Ong has 15 years of working experience in the property and development field. She was the CEO of MTT Properties and Development which spearheaded the vision of the largest township development, Botanica CT in Balik Pulau, Penang. Datin Seri Ong was also primarily involved with the construction of the Prince of Wales Island International School and was part of the initial group of governing members from the school’s inception.
